#refugeeswelcome is a project/response made by sixteen Musical Theatre students at the University of Portsmouth to artist’s Nikos Papadopoulos’ work Plasticobilism, which was exhibited in outdoors spaces in Portsmouth during the event Look Up. As part of their Devised Project Unit, the students participated in the Coffee Shop Conversation #refugeeswelcome: citizens of Europe, which included a discussion about movement in Europe, identity and citizenship with Nikos Papadopoulos, Dr. Nora Siklodi (Lecturer in Politics & European Studies), Evi Stamatiou (artist) and members of the public. During the conversation the students discussed with Nikos Papadopoulos about what inspired his work and also about their own engagement with the refugee crisis. During the next stage of the project, they engaged with Nikos’ artwork in the public spaces and started developing site-specific movement. The site-specific movement was later transferred into the studio, where they experimented with multimedia on stage, shadow theatre and storytelling practices. The last draft of their work was filmed and edited by Evi Stamatiou with the purpose to move audiences about the stories of refugees.
